He demands they either give up their annual allowance of £13,932 or resign, triggering by-elections.
The councillors, however, are not backing down. They argue that they are actively working for their constituents, fulfilling their duties beyond council meetings. Doyle, for instance, emphasizes her deep involvement in the local community, while Hayden highlights her recent campaigning efforts and dismisses the importance of social media presence.
Kemp, a veteran politician elected in 1973, believes that these councillors are letting down their constituents by not participating in crucial meetings. He points out that their absence from planning, committee, and budget meetings is appalling and goes against the spirit of democratic representation. The Local Government Act 1972 supports this stance, stating that councillors must attend meetings regularly or face removal from office.
